What is Acne?
Often called pimples or zits by the teenagers so often afflicted with this malady, acne is the result of an inflammation of the skin. Sebum, an oily substance that is secreted by the body, normally drains to the surface of the skin. When sebum secretions block skin follicles, bacteria and yeast grow and the skin becomes inflamed. This inflammation causes the acne to rupture. Because sebum secretions increase with hormonal changes, acne is a particularly pesky affliction during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

How can I treat Acne?
The Chinese approach to curing acne is to cool a pathogenic heat in the lungs and intestines. Though there are many remedies, some of my favorites include eating plenty of squash and cucumbers, avoiding excess sugar and fried foods, and taking extra zinc and vitamin A supplements. Acne can also be relieved by the Chinese herbs siler, rhubarb, peony, angelica, and astragalus.

What should I avoid in my lifestyle for Acne?
To reduce the chance of getting acne, one must avoid stress and the use of chemical cosmetic, skin, and hair care products. Medications that can trigger or worsen a case of acne include birth control pills, steroids, and psychotropic drugs. Other behaviors to avoid are pressing a cell phone to your face, biting your nails, and smothering your face in your pillow at night.
