Latin name: Fructus semen arctii lapae, Arctium lappa
Chinese name: niu bang zi
Other name: great burdock seed
What is Arctium?
Arctium, also called great burdock, is a medium-sized plant with large leaves, thick stalks, and reddish-purple, thistle-like flowers. The seeds are used medicinally to treat many conditions, including soothing a sore throat, ridding the body of toxins, and relieving swelling.
What are the health benefits of Arctium?
Arctium has long been known as an herb that detoxifies the blood and promotes urination. This herb is commonly used for cleansing, soothing and purifying the entire system. It has antibiotic properties and has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in lab experiments. Arctium is also used to treat colds that are accompanied by fever, cough, and a red, swollen sore throat. Additionally, arctium is used for hot, itchy rashes and red swellings on the skin. Ointments or tinctures of arctium applied to the skin can be effective in alleviating psoriasis, eczema, acne, hemorrhoids, and chronic sores.
Are there any precautions for taking Arctium?
When experiencing diarrhea, arctium could make the situation worse, as it moistens the intestines. As with all herbs, it is best to consult a licensed practitioner or physician.
Where can I find Arctium?
Arctium in raw, powdered extract, or tincture form can be found in Asian specialty stores and at the offices of Chinese herbalists and medical practitioners.
