Chondroitin Sulfate

What is Chondroitin Sulfate?
Chondroitin sulfate is a substance most commonly associated with its role as a supplement for treating osteoarthritis. It is typically sold and administered with the amino sugar glucosamine—the two of which form the basis of the osteoarthritis treatment. Chondroitin sulfate is most often the extract of cartilage from cows and pigs, but other animal sources are used as well. The primary mechanism in chondroitin sulfate is that of an anti-inflammatory agent, and taking it as a supplement is thought to restore deficiencies of a comparable substance in humans.

What are the health benefits of Chondroitin Sulfate?

Chondroitin sulfate is used with glucosamine to strengthen bones after one has suffered from bone loss, reduce inflammation from gout, and for treating tendonitis. It is also used to treat inflammation of the bladder, certain forms of coronary disease, interstitial cystitis, psoriasis, and conditions of the eye. The scientific findings of the use of this supplement for these last conditions, however, is yet to prove a significant benefit for the sufferer.

Where can I find Chondroitin Sulfate?

Chondroitin Sulfate can be found online, in health food stores, or in the offices of alternative medical practitioners.
