What is Diarrhea?
Most people, at some point, get loose or liquid bowel movements, which is also known as diarrhea. Many of these instances are the result of the body reacting to a virus, parasite, or form of bacteria from substances, such as contaminated food, and are relieved when the body rejects it and expels it through the bowels. Chronic diarrhea, however, is often symptomatic of a larger condition, including inflammatory bowel disorder or irritable bowel syndrome. If chronic diarrhea is left unchecked, the body can become dehydrated and the safety and the health of the sufferer can be in jeopardy. Diarrhea is often the result of a poor diet and a stressful lifestyle.
How can I treat Diarrhea?
Traditional Chinese medicine considers all cases of chronic diarrhea to be the result of problems in the liver, spleen, or kidney systems. In addition to acupuncture and herbal therapy, treatment of chronic diarrhea addresses proper eating habits and stress reduction. The recommended diet for a chronic diarrhea sufferer consists of eating smaller meals more often and eating foods such as blueberries, green apples, sweet potatoes and yams, fresh figs, white rice, and pearl barley, as well as plenty of clean water to ensure proper hydration. Other remedies include eating yogurt with live cultures, drinking black tea, and eating rice cakes.
What should I avoid in my lifestyle for Diarrhea?
When suffering from diarrhea, it is important to not overeat and not eat too many cold foods, such as ice cream and iced beverages. It is also important to limit the amount of dairy products, spicy foods, oily foods, preservatives, artificial additives, and white flour and sugar. Also stay away from substances that irritate the intestinal lining such as alcohol and coffee.
