What is Dong Quai?
Dong quai has been usually recognized in traditional Chinese medicine for its treatment of gynecological conditions and needs. It is indigenous to China and the eastern regions of Asia, and is said to be one of the few good non-animal sources of vitamin B12. The use of dong quai centers on the root, which contains most of the plant’s medicinal qualities.

What are the health benefits of Dong Quai?
Dong quai’s use in traditional Chinese medicine has focused on its ability to treat gynecological disorders for thousands of years. Its qualities as a uterine and blood tonic and also as a hormonal regulator inform its use for helping with the female reproductive system. As such, it is used to treat anemia caused by heavy menstruation, and is also used to treat irregular menstruation, premenstrual syndrome, and menopause. Dong quai is also employed to ensure a healthy pregnancy and easy delivery. Additionally, it is sometimes used as an aphrodisiac. Dong quai inhibits the growth of various bacteria including Bacillus dysenteriae and Bacillus typhi. Other conditions it is used for include fatigue, high blood pressure, promotion of blood circulation, and relief from constipation through the loosening of the bowels.
