What is a Goji Berry?
Goji berry refers to the fruit of the Lycium barbarum tree and has become more commonly known in the Western world as “wolfberries.” The original habitat of goji berries is unknown, but they now grow all over the world. They have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, though people in the United States and other countries have begun including them into their lifestyle since the beginning of the twenty-first century to benefit from their antioxidant qualities. The berries are bright orange-red and are typically sold in dried form, similar to that of raisins. The terms “Himalayan goji berry” and “Tibetan goji berry” are terms used in the health food market, but they don’t actually come from the Himalayan mountains. Goji berries are incorporated into a variety of cuisines including Chinese soups, various wines, and alone as a snack. They enjoy frequent use in raw food diets as well.
What are the health benefits of Goji Berries?
Goji berries are prized for their high antioxidant activity, and are used to enhance immunity, improve eyesight, protect the liver, improve circulation, boost sperm count, increase plasma levels, lower fevers, lower cholesterol, and restore energy. Additionally, they are used against cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, tuberculosis, vision diseases, nosebleeds, coughs, skin rashes, and asthma. A tonic tea is also sometimes made from the leaves of the tree.
