What is Morning Sickness?
Many women—approximately 80%—experience nausea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, light-headedness, and vomiting soon after they learn that they are pregnant. These symptoms may occur throughout the day, but are most often experienced in the morning hours. This condition is known as morning sickness, and while it typically goes away by the second trimester of pregnancy, it can become a nuisance and a potential obstacle to having a healthy pregnancy. When a woman experiences morning sickness by itself, it is not usually an indication of serious illness. However, if some of the symptoms are experienced in excess, the mother could experience a diminished appetite. This could hinder the proper intake of nutrients and can have adverse effects on both the mother’s and the fetus’s nutrition.
How can I treat Sickness?
Traditional Chinese medicine considers acupuncture to be the most effective means for treating the nausea associated with morning sickness. It is also important to get adequate protein in the form of chicken, turkey, lamb, and eggs, healthy fats from nuts, seeds, flaxseeds, and olive oil, fiber from grains such as oats, brown rice, millet, and quinoa. Eat more fruits such as papaya, apples, and berries, ginger to settle the stomach, and plenty of beans and legumes. Other remedies include eating smaller, more frequent meals, drinking tea from fresh ginger root and orange peel three or four times a day, and eating a few crackers before getting out of bed in the morning to soak up stomach acid. Moderate exercise, such as walking in the morning and evening, as well as meditation can also help to settle symptoms of morning sickness.
What should I avoid in my lifestyle for Sickness?
Morning sickness can be worsened by overeating, skipping meals, eating oily foods and/or heavy meats, indulging in sweets, and drinking coffee and/or alcohol.
