What is NAC?
N-acetyl cysteine is a dietary supplement with powerful antioxidant properties. Derived in the body from the amino acid cysteine, NAC stimulates the enzyme glutathione, which helps to detoxify a variety of foreign compounds and carcinogens such as mercury, lead, and arsenic. NAC also strengthens the general functioning of the immune system by augmenting the glutathione reserves in the body.
What are the health benefits of NAC?
NAC helps to protect the body—especially the lungs—against toxins. It has also been used as a decongestant and to provide relief from respiratory disorders. NAC can help in the treatment of emphysema, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, and pneumonia.
Researchers have found that NAC can also play a role in the treatment of some brain disorders and in the prevention and treatment of cancer. It is also believed that NAC may help to reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The use of NAC as a supplement has been shown to help protect the cells against damage from chemotherapy.
Where can I find NAC?
NAC is available as an inhalant and also in liquid, power, capsule, and effervescent tablet forms. It can be found both online and in health food stores.
