What is Phosphatidylseine?
Phosphatidylserine, or PS, is a phospholipid, which is a kind of fatty substance found in great abundance in cell membranes. PS is made by the body and plays a significant role in facilitating the membranes’ transporting of nutrients and waste products in and out of cells. PS has been found to lower stress response and has been found to promote the release of neurotransmitters in the brain. When made into a supplement, PS has been traditionally made from the brain of cows, but viral concerns associated with this source have instigated a creation of supplements made from soybeans and other plants.

What are the health benefits of Phosphatidylserine?
PS has been most prominently been associated with its treatment of age-related dementia and memory loss, though most of this documentation and usage has been centered on European practices. Studies are less conclusive, however, regarding the use of PS as a product for enhancing brain activity of younger people. PS is also marketed as a supplement to be taken for building muscle and recovering from heavy exercise, though there is little evidence to support this claim. PS may also help the body respond better to mental stress.

What foods are good sources of Phosphatidylserine?
PS can be found in greatest abundance in cow’s brains, but it can also be found in other animal organs such as chicken heart, pig’s spleen, and pig’s kidney. Other good sources include certain types of fish like mackerel, herring, tuna, and eel. Non-animal sources are not as good of a source of PS, though white beans have a comparable amount to some animal products.

Are there other ways to take Phosphatidylserine?
PS can be found as a supplement online, in health food stores, and in the offices of alternative medical practitioners.
