Rosacea

What is Rosacea?
Famed business mogul J. P. Morgan was known to hate having his picture taken because of how his rosacea left his nose deformed. Rosacea is a chronic acne condition that causes redness, bumps, and other forms of discoloration, deformity, and possible disfiguration on the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. It is not known what exactly causes rosacea, but it’s thought that genetics, diet, lifestyle, and possibly parasitic mites may play a role. Cited triggers of rosacea include extreme weather, excessive sunlight or sunburn, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, and certain medications. Rosacea is known to occur mainly in people of northwestern European descent.

How can I treat Rosacea?
Traditional Chinese medicine considers rosacea to be caused by an abundance of heat in the lung, stomach, and heart networks, and treatment focuses on clearing this heat and calming the spirit. This is done in part with a diet of more bland than spicy foods including whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and fresh fruits. Foods to be included in this regimen include pearl barley, mung beans, cucumbers, beets, beet tops, dandelion greens, mulberries, lyceum fruits, and Chinese prunes, as well as cold-water fish and 60 ounces of water per day. Other remedies include making a soak of gauze and chamomile tea and applying it to the affected area, and having a tablespoon of flax seed oil or fish oil daily. It also helps to practice tai chi or qi gong to relieve the stress and anxiety that may trigger a rosacea outbreak.

What should I avoid in my lifestyle for Rosacea?
It is best to avoid things that create heat and irritation, including processed foods, hot and spicy foods, fried and oily foods, white flour and sugar, soft drinks, aged cheese, animal meats, red wine and other forms of alcohol, and excessive exposure to the sun.

Additionally, you might try the herbal supplement “Exquisite Skin” and “Regenerating Cream” by Traditions of Tao. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
