Best way to take calcium?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
Is there a best way to take calcium for maximum absorption and effectiveness?

A: Good evidence also tells us that when calcium needs to be taken with vitamin D to be absorbed. Some forms of calcium appear to be better absorbed and more effective than others. Perhaps the best forms of calcium are calcium citrate and calcium citrate malate. Because calcium competes with the absorption of other minerals, taking an additional multi-mineral supplement is also a good idea. Adding various trace minerals such as zinc, copper, and manganese, along with calcium and vitamin D seems to produce further improvement. Essential fatty acids, such as fish oil and GLA from evening primrose oil, may also enhance the effectiveness of calcium.

In lieu of calcium supplements, you may find these specially formulated Traditions of Tao products helpful for strengthening bones: “DuraBone” and “Arthritis/Joint”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
