Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
Is it contradictory to be a bodybuilder and holistic/natural health pursuer simultaneously? What schools could I go to that specialize in acupuncture and Oriental medicine?
A: It depends on the type of bodybuilding you engage in. Unfortunately, today the sport of bodybuilding has been engulfed with controversy dealing with hormones, steroids, and unnatural means of speeding up or enhancing the body builder’s efforts. This, of course, is not only unnatural; it is also detrimental to your health. If you intend to practice natural health, you must first and foremost embody its principles and teachings.
There are several great schools in the United States that teach acupuncture. I might suggest, since you are also interested in physical fitness, a school that has a lineage in Taoist teachings since they incorporate physical (qi) cultivation as well. A good resource is Acupuncture Schools in US, a web site that can assist you with your search.
You may find these specially formulated Traditions of Tao products helpful for bodybuilding: “Muscle Strength”, “High Performance”, “DuraBone”, and “Arthritis/Joint”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
