Calcium must be paired with vitamin D?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
Is it true that calcium needs to be paired with vitamin D to help prevent osteoporosis?

A: Calcium is necessary to build and maintain bone. You need vitamin D, too, as the body cannot absorb calcium without it. Although your body can manufacture vitamin D when exposed to the sun, in this age of sunblock, supplemental vitamin D may be necessary.
