Foods that make thyroid swell?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
I have trouble with my thyroid, which I take medication for. When I eat a member of the cabbage family and some other foods like peaches, pears, and soy, they make my thyroid swell. What can I do to correct this problem and enjoy these foods?

A: Some of the foods you indicate actually do tend to act as thyroid suppressants. If you have hypothyroid conditions, these foods should be avoided. Your primary physician will be able to give you a better assessment and specific diet recommendations. Do not stop taking prescribed medications as this can lead to hypothyroid shock.
