Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
What does one do for high concentrations of arsenic in the body?
A: There are many different approaches to heavy metal detoxification of the body. Depending on the concentration levels, you may require serious intervention in a hospital setting. Usually a chelation therapy with EDTA can clear some arsenic, but not as easily as it clears some of the other heavy metals. Dimercaprol is the treatment of choice for arsenic toxicity, but it is most effective in acute exposures and should be administered in the first 24 hours after exposure. Vitamin C protects the body somewhat from arsenic toxicity.
There are combination therapies currently being studied in which herbal, exercise, supplement, and heat spa therapies are used in together to conduct a “system flush”. You may check out BWell clinic (www.bwellclinic.com) in Los Angeles specializing in heavy metal and PCB detox.
You may also try the Traditions of Tao herbal formula “Internal Cleanse”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
