Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
I am prone to getting rashes in the summertime. What prevents this or at least alleviates the redness and itching?
A: Barring allergic conditions, this may be due to improper circulation and ventilation of your skin. Diet also plays a major role in the condition of the skin. Avoid spicy, oily, fatty, and fried foods, especially during the summer. Take warm temperature showers (not hot) often. Change undergarments often.
Here are some remedies:
1. Make a tea out of beet tops. Drink this as a water source during summer.
2. Boil chrysanthemum (ju hua) and mint tea and let it cool; use this as tea during summer.
Be sure not to get constipated, as this retains toxins that will be expressed through the skin.
Additionally, you might try the Traditions of Tao cleansing herbal formula “Acne and Blemish” to drain the heat from irritated skin. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
