Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
What is the best way to maintain sexual health when you are over 50 years old?
A: As we age, our source energy dwindles. The first item of business is to preserve energy and to restrain it from further dwindling. Participate in only moderate sexual activities, and keep the occurrences closer to full moon cycles. Take up tai chi or qigong moving meditations; these are great exercises that actually replenish your source energy. Be sure to get an adequate amount of sleep and do not overstress your body. Begin incorporating toning foods into your diet, such as lamb, scallions, sesame seeds, walnuts, lentils, black beans, and cinnamon bark tea.
Here are some remedies:
1. Make lamb stew with daikon radish and Chinese black dates.
2. Steam rooster with ginger.
3. Make tea from walnuts, lotus seeds, pearl barley, Chinese black dates, and lycii fruits. Drink this three times daily.
4. Use walnuts and lycii fruit as trail mix or a snack.
It is important to remember not to overdo and overindulge in sexual activity; it dramatically drains our source energy and leads to premature aging.
