Natural approach to hemorrhoids?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
I have a terrible hemorrhoid problem. Is there a natural approach to curing hemorrhoids?

A: The following natural treatments are widely recommended for hemorrhoids:

Collinsonia root (also known as stone root) is a traditional remedy for hemorrhoids. The proper dosage varies according to the preparation and is usually listed on the label.

Sometimes the herb slippery elm is used orally for hemorrhoids. Topical calendula cream is also a popular treatment. However, there is as yet no real evidence that they work.

I suggest you consult a licensed acupuncturist/herbalist to obtain a specific prescription.

You may also find the specially formulated Traditions of Tao product “Abundant Energy” to be helpful with hemorrhoids. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
