Recommended treatments for gout?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
Are there any recommended treatments for gout?

A: The herb devil’s claw is sometimes recommended as a pain-relieving treatment for gout based on evidence of its effectiveness in various forms of arthritis. (It is not recommended for use by those with ulcers, as it can sometimes cause stomach irritation.)

A traditional remedy for gout is to eat 1/2 pound to 1 pound of cherries a day. You can also buy tablets containing concentrated cherry juice.

You may find these specially formulated Traditions of Tao herbal supplements helpful with gout: “Pain”, “Arthritis/Joint”, and “Blood Builder/Fatigue”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
