What to do to avoid gas pain from uncooked produce?

Q: Dear Dr. Mao,
I can’t digest many uncooked fruits and vegetables. My stomach swells up with gas and is very uncomfortable. What should I do to avoid this gas pain?

A: Eating raw, uncooked, “cold” (energetically as well as temperature) foods damage the stomach and create indigestion. You are describing the classic symptoms of the condition known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as “Stomach and Spleen Deficiency”. I suggest you consult a licensed practitioner of TCM to obtain proper treatment.

In the meantime, cook or steam your vegetables and fruits. A good way to eat fruits is to broil them for a short while. As for the gas, raw foods tend to cause this, as the intestinal bacteria need to “cook” the food before it can digest it.

You may also find these specially formulated Traditions of Tao products helpful for gas: “Abundant Energy” and “Indigestion”. Of course, discuss with your physician before beginning any new health regime.
