What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung disorder in which the walls of the airways become inflamed, causing bronchial tubes to narrow and blocking of the passage of air. Asthma is typically caused by allergies, chronic respiratory infections, and immune hypersensitivity. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and mild wheezing. The blockage of the airways during an asthma attack is the result of an inflammation and buildup of mucous in the respiratory system, a condition caused by triggers such as allergens, cigarette smoke, and stress.

How can I treat Asthma?
One who suffers from asthma should eat a diet that is filled with complex carbohydrates, low in fat, moderate in protein, and abundant in foods that nourish the lungs, such as green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, walnuts, and apples. Other remedies include drinking a lot of warm or room temperature water and taking hot baths with Epsom salts. It is important to encourage calm and rest, rather than exercise, when experiencing an asthma attack. Moderate exercises, such as walking and qi gong, are recommended for improving lung capacity.

What should I avoid in my lifestyle for Asthma?
Those with asthma should avoid shellfish, meats, and egg yolks, as well as mucous-producing foods, such as dairy products and beverages with simple sugars like soda. Other things to avoid include excessive physical activity, alcohol, smoking, caffeine, and excessive stress and anxiety.
